PRESS RELEASE
TANZANIA AND FRANCE COOPERATE TO RETRIEVE DEAD BODIES FROM THE ILL-FATED YEMENIA FLIGHT 626 SANAA-MORONI, ALONG TANZANIAN COASTAL AREAS.
A French Navy ship and a French medical forensic team are currently in Tanzania, at the request of the Tanzanian government, to assist in an emergency operation to retrieve and identify dead bodies believed to have come from the plane which crashed at sea off Comoros on June 30, 2009
The plane, carrying more than 153 people; plunged into the sea near Moroni (Comoro), killing all but a 14 year-old girl who was found alive in the sea. 66 French nationals are believed to have been aboard the ill-fated plane, which they boarded in Sanaa on their way to Moroni.
Since July 7th, about 25 bodies have been retrieved, mainly off-Mafia Islands. They are presumed to be the some of the victims of the Flight 626 crash, and to have been brought to the Tanzanian coastal line by powerful Indian Ocean streams.
A Tanzanian Task Force, with two components (search and medical) has been created to follow the situation.
- The search and medical component of the Tanzanian Task Force is assisted since July 9th by French Navy Frigate ''FLOREAL''. This Frigate was re-routed in emergency to Tanzania, after participating for a few days in a search and rescue operation on Comorian territorial waters, at the request of the Comorian government. Before the air crash, the French frigate was navigating extreme North in the Indian Ocean, within the framework of anti-piracy operations.
The French Frigate “Floreal¨, which carries a helicopter, has participated in operations decided by the Tanzanian Task Force, to search for bodies along the Tanzanian coast, and to retrieve bodies caught in the reefs and mangrove areas.
The medical component of the Tanzanian Task Force is composed of seven French forensic doctors from the French Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team. They have joined the Tanzanian Task Force and are collaborating in identification work of dead bodies, jointly being carried at the Muhimbili Medical Centre from July 13, 2009.
The identification procedure follows the Tanzanian law ; identifying dead bodies according to legal protocols is crucial, for Police and Justice ; as an essential part for compensation of the families or close relatives of people who lost their lives in the plane accident.
As no more new dead bodies are foreseen along the Tanzanian Coastal line, the French Navy Ship FLOREAL is expecting to leave soon from Tanzania. The forensic experts will stay longer in Tanzania, to help finalizing identification work.
