May 12- Cape Town
In this day and age, when many of our youth struggle with unemployment and a hopeless future, Julius Shirima, a 21 year old Tanzanian is a breath of fresh air. Julius is undoubtedly the youngest Tanzanian to ever address dignitaries, opinion makers, and global change makers at the 2011 World Economic Forum in Cape Town.
Shirima, an ex-Kibaha Secondary School Student, completed his high school on a full scholarship at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg in 2010, and was one of 3 African youths invited to WEF to share his outstanding ideas on Youth entrepreneurship and how he has taken the initiative to give back to his community and indeed his country. “My dream and vision is to start the first Entrepreneurship Academy in Tanzania, which will train, develop and invest in great young people’s ideas and make them a reality, thus creation of unlimited job opportunities to millions of youth”.
Shirima is the CEO and founder of Dar es Salaam Youth Entrepreneurial Challenge (DARECHA), in 2009, which is a youth led organisation which aims to inspire, build, develop and connect aspiring young entrepreneurs in Tanzania. DARECHA’s mission is to combat poverty and unemployment by inspiring youth to present their business ideas and compete in a challenge, whereby winners are awarded initial funds to start their businesses. “Through DARECHA, we are instilling an entrepreneurial spirit and confidence to be self employed in our youth, which is something that was hard come by in the past” says Shirima.
Shirima’s vision and passion is what led him to join Global Change Makers, a vibrant community of young activists, volunteers and young entrepreneurs, and brought together by the British Council. Its mission is to empower youth to catalyse positive change in their communities and countries, and Shirima is certainly a young man intent to bring such change to Tanzania. Whilst at the WEF, Shirima had the opportunity to meet and speak to His Excellency President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, about his vision.
