HEADLINE: ‘From Hippos to Gazelles’ – International experts speak at the British Council on Change Leadership in Africa
INTRODUCTION: On Tuesday 17 June at 5.30pm international experts Philip Goodwin and Tony Page will give a talk at the British Council Management Forum (held at the British Council, Corner of Ohio St/Samora Av, Dar es Salaam) on the topic, ‘From Hippos to Gazelles: How Leaders Create Leaders’. The event is one a series of regular monthly Management Forum events hosted by the British Council in Dar es Salaam that seek to develop leadership and business skills in order to improve the growth rate and efficiency of Tanzania’s business sector.
The event will be generously supported by the British Council Management Forum’s new co-sponsors, Celtel Tanzania Ltd. and Tanzanian Breweries Ltd.
BODY: The Management Forum talk will seek to address the following questions:
How does a leader find the spark that ignites a team when it doesn’t want to change?
How do you manage internal change, transforming business results and at the same time satisfy your customers . . . AND sustain the improvements over time?
How do you do all this when your team is spread across different locations, even different countries?
About British Council:
The British Council’s purpose is to build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and other countries and to increase appreciation of the UK’s creative ideas and achievements. This work is driven by a strong belief in internationalism, a commitment to professionalism and an enthusiasm for creativity.
About the British Council Management Forum:
Management Forum is a monthly networking seminar aimed at business and management professionals. Its principal aim is to broaden the professional horizons of participants by facilitating the sharing of experience, knowledge and ideas.
Each month the forum tackles a subject of contemporary interest to the business community, based around topics such as: finance, governance, globalisation, education & skills, human resources.
About Phillip Goodwin:
Philip Goodwin is a senior executive with British Council. He consciously takes the risk of asking people; what do we need to do now?... and how do we want to do it? In this way he builds high performing teams that are creative, strategically aligned and very responsive, more like gazelles than hippos. When he is not grazing the African plains, he makes music with his band MoneyShot with whom he has released two albums.
About Tony Page:
Tony Page is a leadership consultant who shows senior executives and top teams how to create alignment, or “bring everyone onto the same page”. Having lived for more than 20 years in the same house with Helen and two children, Tony’s previous book “Diary of a change Agent” saved him from turning into a hippo by giving him travel, varied work and the challenge to keep on learning.
About the Book: ‘Hippo to Gazelles: How Leaders Create Leaders’
In From Hippos to Gazelles, Goodwin and Page give us new insights into the magic of organisational transformation. This is a real-life story, about a leader and facilitator working together to achieve a successful merger and change in the complex reality of a multinational organisation. Through the use of fable, real-life examples, and a set of practical tools, it is an inspirational handbook for those leaders facing the challenges of managing mergers or changing their organisation. Drawing on research by some of the great organisational and leadership thinkers, and informed by the British Council’s cultural relations, this simple but groundbreaking book describes how in the real world, leaders can create leaders who will deliver business success. If you are a leader who is serious about creating leaders and about transforming your organisation, you need to read this book.
